Quwiyat Olashile Lawal (UK fashion Designer)

Quwiyat Olashile Lawal, a fashion designer based in the UK and boss of Sisi Sewing, has shared why she wants to champion Nigerian fabrics overseas.

Speaking with Potpourri, Lawal said she wants to show the world that traditional materials like Ankara, Adire, and Aso-Oke can be used in many different ways and look great in modern fashion.

“I want the world to see that Nigerian fabrics are not only culturally significant but also adaptable to modern fashion. Through casual, corporate, ceremonial, and climate-appropriate designs, I try to show that these materials can be worn globally,” she said.

Lawal uses Ankara, Adire, and top-quality Aso-Oke to make clothes that mix tradition with everyday style. She is especially keen on Aso-Oke; instead of just using it for big parties or weddings, she turns the hand-woven cloth into sleek, modern outfits that you can wear anywhere.

She showed her latest work at Africa Fashion Week Nigeria in Lagos, where she caught the eye of experts, reporters, and fashion fans alike.

Lawal’s main goal is to make these fabrics practical. She believes they aren't just for special occasions—they can be turned into office wear, daily outfits, or clothes for different types of weather, all while keeping their Nigerian roots.
